Merle Oberon was born on February 19, 1911, in New York City, and died on November 23, 1979, in Los Angeles. She started her cinematic career as Anne Boleyn in The Private Life of Henry VIII, which launched her into the world of British cinema (1933). Following the success of The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), she relocated to the United States to work on films for Samuel Goldwyn Productions.
During the filming of The Dark Angel, she received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance (1935). A traffic accident in 1937 left her with facial damage that might have ruined her career, but she recovered quickly and went on to appear in Wuthering Heights, which became her most well-known performance (1939).
Throughout her adult life, she maintained the lie that she was born in Tasmania, Australia, in order to hide her Indian ancestry; she invented a tale that all of her school records had been burned in a fire, which meant that it could neither be proved nor disproven. For the rest of her professional life, she maintained these fabrications. The year before she died, she eventually acknowledged that her narrative about her origins was false, and documents discovered after her death have proved her real lineage.
